Spring has finally arrived, and there’s no better time to make sure your trees are in great shape. Winter can take a toll on certain types of trees, so a bit of work now will make sure your trees are safe, happy and healthy for the warmer months ahead. Here is our handy spring tree care checklist for beautiful, thriving trees.
Clean Up
First of all, do a bit of a tidy up and get rid of leaves, fallen twigs, branches and any other detritus that may be on the ground around the base of your trees. This will help to keep pests and disease away, lets the sunshine in, helps the tree to breathe and obviously just keeps things looking neat and tidy.
Inspect For Damage And Disease
Once you’ve cleaned up, it’s time to do an inspection of your trees to check for any nasties that may be lurking on, in or around your tree, as well as any damage that may be present.
Do a thorough check of the leaves, branches, trunk and the soil around the tree’s trunk. You’re looking for any abnormalities that may be a sign of damage or disease as well as obvious signs of pests. Damage, disease and infestation that isn’t taken care of can cause your tree to become sick and at risk of dying, which will make it unsafe. Like most things, it’s more easily treated if issues are picked up early, so this is an important step that could save your tree.

Prune
Once you’ve determined if your tree has any dead, damaged or diseased limbs, it’s time to prune. Also if your tree is overhanging your house, powerlines or other services and structures, it will need to be taken care of straight away with a good prune.
Tree pruning is a science and an art, and should only be done by someone who knows exactly what they’re doing, otherwise you could end up making things much worse, by weakening it and leaving it open to infestation and disease. You should only remove limbs for a reason, and they should be removed using the correct techniques and equipment. Not to mention tree pruning can be very dangerous, so if you’re at all unsure about whether you’re up to the task, leave it to the professionals who will expertly and efficiently prune your tree and leave it healthy and looking great.

Add Mulch
One of the best, least costly things you can do for your trees is to add mulch. Mulch is amazing stuff! When applied correctly, mulch can help improve soil quality, regulate temperature, improve moisture retention and repel pests! Wow. There are a couple of important notes around do’s and don’ts here – don’t pile mulch right up against the tree’s trunk, leave a gap of approximately 15 – 20 centimetres. This will ensure the tree doesn’t suffocate and become prone to root rot and other pests and disease. Also don’t use too much mulch, as this can become a moisture and oxygen barrier. Apply layers roughly 10 centimetres deep, and when laying new mulch, mix up what’s already there to help aerate layers.

Fertilise And Water
Give your trees a good drink of water and if you think they need a bit of an extra boost, you might like to give them a special treat in the form of a good quality fertiliser. This will help add nutrients back into the soil, and promote overall tree health. Be careful not to over-water to the point you’re flooding or water-logging the soil, as this can have the opposite effect and actually impair tree health.
